The MNIT uses the latest in science and cutting edge technology to provide services that greatly contribute to organ transplant research, clinical practice and patients' quality of life. The MNIT's unwavering commitment to education and research and development of breakthrough software for clinical and scientific use have effectively broadened the scope for advancements in transplantation.

Research

The MNIT's Research extends far into the reaches of several areas of organ transplantation, with an underlying goal to consistently advance the science and practice of organ transplantation.

Current research studies include:

  • Alport Syndrome research
  • Research for the prevention of post-transplant diabetes
  • End-stage kidney disease antibody and inflammation gene chip research
  • Multiple clinical research studies

The MNIT research can be divided broadly into three areas:

  • Studies of the diseases that lead to end-stage organ failure
  • Studies of the donor organ and transplant function after transplantation
  • Studies of the recipient response to transplantation

Education

The MNIT's Education Department oversees both professional and general public education activities.

General public education activities include:

  • providing information about transplantation and donation to patients
  • providing information to the public about ESRD prevention
  • providing information to the public about organ donation targeting at-risk and underserved populations

Professional education activities include:

  • participation in numerous regional, national, and international conferences
  • maintaining a postgraduate Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Fellowship Program approved by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
  • maintaining a Residency Program that has trained 60 urology residents and nephrology fellows from the USC's Keck School of Medicine.

Our Laboratories
Serology

The MNIT Serology and Molecular (Clinical) Laboratory provides testing services 24-hours/365 days a year. Testing is performed in major specialty areas including chemistry, hematology and serology. This laboratory is one of the only laboratories in the U.S. to provide this type of specialty testing with results within 6-8 hours.

Histocompatibility

The Histocompatibility Laboratory advances the assessment of immunosuppressiveness in transplant recipients by looking at HLA antibody profiles. This provides immensely helpful information for clinicians as they treat their patients. The MNIT's HLA lab also works on projects to genetically modulate HLA expression.

TranTrak™

TranTrak™ is a unique and comprehensive Transplant Patient Care database software system that has been developed by the MNIT over the last 10 years in conjunction with several hospital transplant programs. It manages all the clinical data of transplant patients and enables day-to-day capture and analysis. It allows a transplant program to manage more patients more effectively than any other system available.
