MNIT Organ Transplantation

The Mendez National Institute of Transplantation (MNIT) is a public non-profit organization that adheres to its founding mission:

To advance the science and practice of organ transplantation through clinical research, basic research, and educational programs

To succeed in its mission, the MNIT performs several functions:

  • Conducts research in critical areas, including minimization of organ rejection
  • Leverages its accumulated medical knowledge, and active transplant service programs in instituting educational programs and conducting research
  • Engages in clinical research to develop new and innovative approaches to organ transplantation
  • Trains surgeons from around the world so that they may develop and enhance local transplant programs
  • Administers community education programs to teach those who are particularly at risk of organ failure about proactive health care and transplantation as a treatment option

The MNIT's scope of operations is both broad and deep, but its reach has never exceeded its grasp.  The Institute stays firmly committed to its mission and consistently broadens its geographic and technological scope.

MNIT Evolving into a National Institute

In 1984, in affiliation with the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine and the Daughters of Charity Health System, the Los Angeles Transplant Institute was formed. In 1989, the Los Angeles Transplant Institute became the Mendez National Institute of Transplantation (MNIT).

The affiliation with USC and the Daughters of Charity Health System continues to this day, but MNIT remains an independent organization, unrelated to or connected with any other private organization or any government agency.
